How to Break up with Stephen Harper

Author: Paulo SenraPosted in: CANADA ARTICLES

If you have been paying attention to Canadian politics recently, you probably are aware of the narrative that has developed: Stephen Harper's Conservatives are changing Canada.

But are they?  If so, why are Canadians not mad as hell?

Perhaps it is because, although interesting to talk and read about about, none of the issues below actually resonate with the average Canadian.  And sadly, none of these stories seriously threatens the re-election of the Harper government.

1. climate change;

2. abortion;

3. same-sex marriage;

4. transgendered issues;

5. the death penalty.

It pains me to admit this (because I too have written and complained about most of the items in the above list), but the longer progressive Canadians focus on the aforementioned issues, the more likely Stephen Harper will remain in power come 2015.

Ignore the madness? No, but it is time to get serious, organized, and selective about what we emphasize as this government's major failing.

Yesterday, I was happy to see the Opposition finally concentrate on something that actually matters in the world of retail politics.

Ultimately, if the aim is to break up with Harper's Conservatives, then we - the media, opposition parties, and concerned citizens - must start asking the right question: How many modest, hard-working Canadians will you clobber in your quest to eliminate the deficit that you yourselves have created?

Looks like the seniors are up first.
